One of the many annual highlights in San Diego is the always-popular San Diego County Fair… which is generally called the “Del Mar Fair” by San Diego home owners and local residents. This year the fair will be open from Friday June 12 through Sunday July 5 (but closed on Monday June 15 and Monday June 22). The Del Mar fair has something for everyone, including music, food, animal shows, carnival rides, and hundreds of vendors.
This year the main musical events include performances Melissa Etheridge, “American Idol” stars David Cook, David Archuletta, and Kelly Clarkson, country legends Loretta Lynn and Clint Black, rocker Joan Jett, ever-popular dance bands Abba and KC and the Sunshine Band, as well as the Motown King Smokey Robinson. To help celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival, the musical extravaganza begins on June 12 with star-studded performances by Jefferson Starship, Country Joe McDonald, Canned Heat, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and the Grateful Dead’s Tom Constanten. With a start like that, this year promises to be genuine love fest!
Owners of Del Mar homes are always enthusiastic about the fair, not only for its entertainment value, but also because the fair creates very strong rental demand for condos and houses in Del Mar CA. Many Del Mar home owners and Solana Beach home owners take advantage of the opportunity to rent their houses and condos for top dollar during fair season and during the mid-to-late summer horse racing season. Del Mar Rents are always on the high end, but the summer vacation rentals near the beach in Del Mar can take a serious bite out of mortgage payments.
For example, a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom 1,700 sq . ft. house near the beach in Del Mar is currently available for $4,950 per WEEK starting in June. In Solana Beach, about a mile north of the Del Mar fairgrounds racetrack, a furnished 2-bedroom, 2 ½ bath ocean-view town house is available for $6,000 per month in June during fair season or $10,000 per month during the July/August racing season. The same unit is available for $2,700 per month from September through May. This is typical of the Del Mar / Solana Beach neighborhoods, and it is one of the reasons why homes in Del Mar and also homes in Solana Beach cost so much to purchase.
The first San Diego County Fair was an agricultural fair in 1880 as an agricultural fair, and it has been an annual tradition ever since. 4H animal husbandry events are still some of the most popular at the fair. Local farmers, ranchers, and equestrian enthusiasts flock to the fair from nearby Rancho Santa Fe, Poway, Escondido, and from all across California. Grand Champion judging is held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds this year on Thursday, July 2. Separate events are held for youth and adult competition. Many of the animals will be sold at auction on July 4.
